Learn traditional Laboratory and progressive open-air Mushroom Spawn Cultivation techniques. In this class we will prepare grain, sawdust, dowel plug, and straw/coffee ground substrates for generating healthy mushroom mycelia. I will walk you though every step of the process, and we will employ sterile lab techniques as well as an Open-Air technique that I have developed, which alloys for culturing without a laboratory or harsh chemicals. This course is intended for those who wish to grow their own spawn, capture strains from the wild, or are interested in commercial cultivation. Every attendee will have the chance to do transfers, and a workbook and cultures will be provided. A healthy vegetarian lunch will also be provided.

The course begins with a slide show presentation that explains how to identify a wide variety of mushrooms found in the Northeast. The course continues with a mushroom foraging hike. The afternoon is spent practicing identification skills with the mushrooms gathered on the foraging hike, learning mushroom cultivation techniques. Hand-outs are provided with resources for further learning. Each student will receive a mushroom kit that they can take home and grow their very own mushrooms. Tuition includes lunch.
